Being offered here is a vintage leather bound gilt trimmed Bible. The title page in this hardcover leather bound Bible reads: "The Holy Bible, Containing The Old and New Testaments, Together with the Apocrypha: Translated out of the Original Tongues, and with the Former Translations diligently compared and revised. To which is appended, a Concordance, the Psalms of David in Metre, an index, tables and other useful matters. The text conformable to the Standard of the American Bible Society. Philadelphia: Published by John B. Perry, 198 Market Street. Stereotyped by L. Johnson & Co. 1855.". This Bible measures approximately 10" wide, about 12 ½" long, and about 3 ½" thick. The black leather hardcover (front and back) displays a gold embossed motif which is also present along the edges of the cover. A solid brass clasp holds this book closed and inscribed on the clasp is "I. T. and E. T. Chamberlain". We are not sure if the middle initials are "T"s. The pages of the book are edged with gilding. The bottom of the spine reads: "14 PLS. ILLS. APOC. CON. PS.". The spine ends and cover corners show some ware and bumps. The spine top and bottom front hinges are cracked, as is the bottom rear hinge. There is also some scuffing on the cover but considering the book’s age, it is minimal. This religious document is beautifully illustrated with various engravings, chromolithographs, and colored prints. The inside front of the spine is separated from the book but the "thread" used to bind this Bible is still intact causing the binding to be a little loose. However, the gilding is crisp, the clasp works, and the leather is in good condition with only one small "chip" on the inside of the outer side edge of the back cover. There is also flaxing on some of the pages. There is a section in the Bible for family recordings, which has been used to record the marriage of Isaac T. Chamberlain and Elizabeth T. Dixon on July 22, 1856; the birth of their son Isaac Dixon Chamberlain in Wilmington, Delaware on December 10, 1858; and his death. This is a great document of religious history. on 4 November 2006.
